About the Exhibition "Franz Gertsch. Looking Back. A Ninetieth Birthday Tribute:"
To mark the ninetieth birthday of the great Swiss artist Franz Gertsch, Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich presents an exhibition focused, for once, entirely on his early work. ETH’s collection of prints and drawings has maintained a long-standing relationship with the artist and holds many works on paper from his more mature phase. By looking back to the beginnings of his career, the Graphische Sammlung now offers a surprising and, for many, new view of his work. The art of this period clearly shows just how keenly Gertsch explored various forms of expression in his early years. Though always re maining true to the figurative, his works are stylistically diverse, ranging from exquisitely detailed woodcuts to romantically inspired drawings. For this exhibition, Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich has collaborated closely with the artist in selecting individually themed groups of works from his personal collection and juxtaposing them with works from its own holdings.
