Pan-European archive searches
ETH Zurich's University Archives now publish their entire metadata on the Archives Portal Europe (APE). This includes finding aids to fonds of the university's management bodies and organisational units since its foundation in 1855. Over 1,500 collections of personal papers from scientists and societies with ties to ETH Zurich are also described.
The Archives Portal Europe (external link) records a total of around 250 million sources from hundreds of European archives, thereby facilitating searches across archives and even borders. The search for topics represented in the University Archives' holdings, such as mechanical engineering or nuclear energy, can therefore be embedded in an international context. Searches for separated personal papers from Louis Agassiz to Gustav Zeuner also greatly profit from this.
ETH Zurich's University Archives are the first Swiss institution to use the fully automated APE harvesting function for the data transfer and set new nationwide benchmarks in this field.
The additional search option supplements the in-house search platforms, such as the Archivdatenbank online (external link) and ETH-Bibliothek's Knowledge Portal.
