Aim of the project

The overall aim of the project Geodata4SwissEDU as well as the follow-up project is the establishment, the operation and the further development of the national service

The service

The national service plugs a gap in the field of geodata research. The service (available form spring 2017) offers members of Swiss universities a central access to geodata from federal offices and selected cantons that require a licence. To this day, there is no comparable service in Switzerland that meets the specific requirements of an academic group.

The new national service builds on existing services: GeoVITe (external link) from the Institute of Cartography and Geoinformation (IKG) at ETH Zurich, the Geoinformation Competence Centre's (external link) services at the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil (HSR), and ETH-Bibliothek’s consultation service.

Central entry point to the service will be the website (external link). The portal is currently being implemented and will be available in spring 2017.

Description of the project Geodata4SwissEDU

The aim of the cooperative project Geodata4SwissEDU is to set up an efficient national service for the targeted searching, access, presentation, downloading and processing of comprehensive geoinformation for education and research at Swiss universities. The project's central goals are an expanded geodata range (besides data from the government, selected cantonal and project-specific geodata will also be integrated), the implementation of a scalable technical infrastructure and the development of user-oriented functionalities for geodata management. The development of an adequate operational concept guarantees the sustainability of Geodata4SwissEDU.

Description of the follow-up project

Central aim of the follow-up project, which will start in April 2017, is the successful establishment of the national service at Swiss universities and the development of a customer base, which will allow the long-term, self-sustaining funding of the service as of 2019. Furthermore, the project aims at strengthening the service by optimising and expanding its data and functionalities, which will increase the attractiveness of the service for users and thereby facilitate the sustainable establishment at Swiss universities.

Synergies and context

Both projects are part of the swissuniversities-funded SUC Programme 2013-2016 P-2 "Scientific Information: Access, Processing and Safeguarding (external link)".
