The Special Collections enclose a large number of unique holdings held by the ETH-Bibliothek and make them accessible to the general public.

  • Rare Books

    • Collection of scientific literature dating from the middle of the 15th century to the beginning of the 20th century

  • Archives and Private Collections

    • Central facility for permanent preservation, and description of records of archival value from all organisational units of ETH Zurich and of the ETH Board
    • The official records are complemented by actively taking over material from private ownership

  • Image Archive

    • Preserves, describes and makes available photographic collections and photographs in personal papers.
    • Preserves, describes and makes available film and audio material from private collections and events taking place at ETH Zurich

  • Map Collection

    • Topographical and subject-based maps from the 20th and 21st centuries with scientific-technical content
    • Atlases and books, relief maps and globes, CD-ROMs

  • Report Collection

    • Scientific reports, printed or on microfiche
    • Other microform documents: dissertations, conference proceedings, scientific journals, newspapers and periodicals from the 17th to the 20th centuries on roll film, security filming of at-risk books and collections of formulae and tables from the stock of the ETH-Bibliothek

    Since August 2007, the collection of literature on cable-car technology has been on long-term loan to the training centre of the Swiss Cable-Car Association (SBS) in Meiringen.

  • How to use the Special Collections

    • The digitization of documents of the Special Collections is constantly proceeding.
    • For reasons of conservation, most documents are only available for consultation in the Special Collections Reading Room.
    • To consult documents of the Archives and Private Collections or the Image Archive please announce your visit in advance.
  • Infrastructure in the Special Collections Reading Room

    • Study spaces for customers working with documents from the Special Collections.
    • 4 public workstations for users of the Special Collections (personal login required)
    • 1 ArcGIS workstation: ArcGIS Desktop, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
    • 1 public workstation with electronic overview grids (Toporama)
    • 3 readers for microfiche and microfilm
