Interlibrary loan

We obtain and supply documents or copies from documents that cannot be located in the Knowledge Portal or cannot be ordered online. We search for the documents in other Swiss and foreign libraries and order them for you.

These services are free of charge.

  • Delivery of copies

    • Delivery of copies by email or by post to the address given in the user account

Services for students, private individuals and companies

For these services a fee is charged: fees (pdf, 99 kB)

Note: Order the documents online from libraries of the Informationsverbund Deutschschweiz IDS with your user account number. If you would like the ETH-Bibliothek to place this order, a supplementary fee will be charged.

Information for libraries wishing to order documents from the ETH-Bibliothek: Electronic document delivery

General conditions

  • Delivery times

    • From Switzerland: about 2 weeks
    • From abroad: about 2 to 6 weeks

    These periods may be considerably longer in the case of documents that are currently on loan or that are hard to obtain.

  • Loan periods

    • The loan periods of the supplying libraries are binding.
    • Otherwise, the loan period is four weeks, with renewal on request.
  • Borrowing and use

    Certain documents such as theses, dissertations or old documents may only be consulted on the premises of the ETH-Bibliothek. In order to consult them, an identity card must be deposited at the information desk in the InfoCenter.

    In some cases, dissertations and reports may only be borrowed in the form of microfiches. Readers are available in the Special Collections Reading Room of the ETH-Bibliothek.

    Excluded from the interlibrary loan are:

    • Reference works
    • Patents and standards
    • Loose-leaf publications
    • Complete volumes of journals, bound and unbound volumes of newspapers
    • Dissertations which are available for purchase
