Portrait of the month: François Louis Schüle (1860–1925)
On the occasion of the 150th birthday of François Louis Schüle (1860 to 1925), professor of construction analysis and building material technology
Following a career in Gustav Eiffel’s world-famous Parisian construction company, in the Federal Construction Department in Bern and at the University of Lausanne, François Louis Schüle worked at ETH Zurich from 1901 to 1924 as professor of construction analysis and building material technology. At the same time he was the director of EMPA (Swiss federal institute for materials science and technology development). His research contributed significantly to the professionalisation of the building and construction industry.
