Vascular plant herbarium

Aim of the project

Digitization and publication of 100,000 vascular plant specimens from the combined herbaria of Z+ZT (external link) based on the latest standards and optimised workflows.

Description of the project

The project is divided into three sub-projects:

  1. The processing and provision of important but as yet inaccessible specimens constitute the initial steps on the road towards indexing a collection. Against this backdrop, around 6,000 specimens from Hans Hess's Angola Collection are to be mounted, labelled, digitized and finally rendered accessible on the combined herbaria web portal (external link).
  2. Thanks to two digitization stations, a digitization chain in keeping with today's (elevated) international standards is to be established.
  3. In the long run, optimal-cost management and an attractive provision and presentation of the data compiled pose the main challenges in the digital indexing of collections. Consequently, around 15,000 type specimens and around 85,000 specimens from the Brassicaceae plant family are to be digitized as examples in this initial phase.
