Research Collection: Statistics January 2020

Since we have been publishing download statistics, the top 5 countries have always been the same – until January 2020.

Last month, the United Kingdom did not appear in the top 5 for the first time. Russia has now taken fifth place instead. However, we are certain that this is not a political statement by the UK researchers, but merely a statistical fluctuation.

There was also a surprising development in the proportion of open access publications in the Research Collection last month. The proportion of open access publications for 2019 dropped from 36% to 33% within one month. How can this development be explained? The majority of publications in the Research Collection are recorded in December and January, as the Academic Reporting is due at the end of January. As a result, the number of publications that are not open access increases sharply and the percentage of open access falls. However, we are sure that the open access percentage will soon rise again due to the lifting of embargo periods and postprints.
