Pauli's way led him to the University of Göttingen, which
looked back on a long tradition as a stronghold of mathematics. In 1921 Max
Born returned to his alma mater, where he had habilitated in 1909. In the
tradition of Felix Klein and David Hilbert, Born trained a whole guard of young
nuclear physicists, among whom were Werner
Heisenberg and Pascual Jordan. For the winter
semester 1921/22, Pauli became a regular assistant of Max
Born. |

| A crucial event for the young assistant was his participation in
the famous "Bohr Festival" (Niels Bohr's lecture series on nuclear physics) in
June 1922. Here Pauli made the acquaintance of Niels
Bohr, who invited him to his institute in Copenhagen. Because of his
personality, Bohr acted as an integrative figure for a large circle of young
nuclear physicists, who further developed quantum theory in fruitful
discussions. During 1922/23 Wolfgang Pauli spent a year studying at the
institute in Copenhagen and remained in lifelong contact and deep friendship
with Bohr from this point on. |
