Here Pauli first completed his work on spin and statistics. Then,
in close collaboration with the research group around
Robert Oppenheimer, he turned to the meson
theory of nuclear forces. As Pauli was dispensed from his teaching duties, he
had all the more time at his disposal for pure research and he was able to turn
to more time-consuming topics.
Wolfgang Pauli conducted his theoretical
fundamental research noticeably in the shadow of war research. The majority of
his well-known colleagues had joined the Manhattan Project in order to
collaborate on the development of an atom bomb under the leadership of Robert
Oppenheimer in Los Alamos. Almost only foreigners, who were not allowed to go
to Los Alamos for security reasons, remained with Pauli in pure research. |
