Book launch: Himmel und Zahlen in alten Drucken- Erlesenes aus der ETH-Bibliothek
For more than 160 years, ETH Zurich took great pains to collect and curate old and valuable books. Nowadays, ETH Library’s collection of old books comprises 75,000 volumes of monographs and journals published from the 15th to the 19th century – a veritable treasure trove brimming with books of sometimes inestimable value to bibliophiles and academia. For the first time, this book catalogues a selection of around 75 valuable works related to astronomy and mathematics from ETH Zurich’s holdings. Both subjects form the core of the collection of old books. Not only are the extensive catalogue entries based on an autopsy of these particular works; the often mysterious fate of these books is also revealed: who were the erstwhile owners of these books and how did they end up at ETH Library? The catalogue section is preceded by two extensive academic essays. The present volume therefore affords an insight into the historical context of astronomy and mathematics, documented by old and rare books from ETH Library’s holdings. It is aimed at interested academics and bibliophiles alike.
